This dimensional, mixed-media piece was inspired by Clive Barker’s novella “The Hellbound Heart”, which in turn was the source material for the popular Hellraiser films.

The creator of the Lament Configuration, or puzzle box (see bottom), Philip Lemarchand, was said to be a “maker of singing birds” several times throughout the novella.

Mr. Barker never described the birds, so I created a hybrid machine of bone, metal, thread, glass, and paper. The mechanical parts and voice of the machine are powered by occult magic using a bit of Lemarchand’s blood and a wisp of his soul.

It can walk, fold its wings, sing, and grasp with its claws and beak. It can even fly thanks to its lacquered paper wings and tail, which consist of snippets of occult and theological texts about the Order of the Gash, the Cenobites, and their dogma. This was a fascination for Lemarchand (my headcanon), even before he created the puzzle box, and you can see his collection of texts in the background.

Okay, actually, the text on the bird’s wings is excerpted directly from my favorite passages in Mr. Barker’s “The Hellbound Heart”. The stack of books references both the novella text itself and Barker’s other works. There is “The Hellbound Heart” itself, Barker’s short story compendium “Books of Blood”, the imagined diary of Gilles de Railles (referenced in THH) “Order of the Gash”, and Barker’s yet-to-be-released “The Scarlet Gospels”, which will also deal with the Cenobites.

A note: My photograph does not show the full quality of the painting, which has several metal pieces raised off of the canvas surface and thread which is stitched through it. The pendant on the bird’s chest also has a faceted cut glass piece that has quite a bit of sparkle in person.
